Winter Practice Tips
Edd Boudreau by Edd Boudreau ( view bio)

Too often I hear that people just put away there clubs for the winter and don't look at them again till spring. All the excuses come out from being too wet, to cold, no time and you have to wear too much clothing. The winter months are quality time to be working on your game with your coach or by yourself.

The first thing you will notice in the winter is you will usually have the range to yourself. Scheduling lessons with your instructor seems to be easier and lessons seem to be a little longer. Things to remember when practicing in the winter are to take your time warming up, stretch a little longer and bring warm clothes. Sweaters, toques, gloves, mitts, rain gear and an umbrella are a must to survive winter excursions to the course.

Practicing at the range should include focusing on swing tempo with wedges and mid- irons. Do remember the ball does not fly as far in the winter as does the summer. Putting greens are usually in better shape in the winter then most time of the year because of the amount of people not using them. Most days you will be the only person on the green besides the greens crew. Focus on short putts inside 10’ feet, concentrating on alignment and putting stroke. The short game is important also so practice your chipping with different irons and spend some time with your wedges from 10-20 yards.

If you are not sure how to practice this winter give your local certified PGA of BC Professional a call and he will be able to set up a tailored practice program for you. Consistent practice habits will lead to better results on the golf course this spring.

Always remember Tempo, Balance and Finish.
